Natalia Kozieł

Born in 1987 in Bydgoszcz, Natalia Kozieł graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, diploma in Prof. Jerzy Ostrogórski’s studio. Both her academic speciality and choice of diploma medium was artistic textile in the experimental fibre studio. Her diploma, entitled “Simply Unusual”, was awarded Mayor’s Prize at the Legnica Painting Review “Young Promotions” in 2011, later followed by the BWA Award in Bydgoszcz and the ARTATTACK Disctinction of the art website.

Currently, Natalia is a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (Kuvataideakatemia), Faculty of Printmaking, where she combines her painting experience with the smell of printer ink.

Natalia Kozieł skilfully blends the language of painting matter and printmaking to create sophisticated, experimental constructions, lending new value to painting. She searches and finds artistic means to express her reaction to the significance of art’s mission in the modern world governed by the reality which stands against our human dreams. Her painting space is located somewhere between abstract forms and concrete representations of phenomena and events. Natalia rescues memories from oblivion, extracts unfulfilled dreams, the touch of unforgettable tenderness and beauty of paradise lost. Everyday reality is our heaven, but only the reality which defines what is beyond the temporality of our being, no matter how marginalized it may be. The artist peeks at the ephemeral moments of passage to a sequence of dreams and then disillusionments defining our complicated existence. I wonder where the boundary is – of unwillingness, escape from the captivity of the vague state of falling into the dehumanized image of life, and willingness to remain in captivity. Natalia depicts the states in between, discovering loss as a stigma of the modern world. Return to what’s lost, discovery of what’s abandoned, restoration of what’s inessential – they are all worth exploring the new, full perception of what’s unseen and what’s our essence. She has the beautiful gift of seeing things and phenomena which are seemingly insignificant. The gift, expressed in a special painting language, opens us to art which is important, close to the metaphysical compelling breath. The multitude of imagery, making the most of painting skill, allows her to discard the tension resulting from the perception of reality and metaphysical truth. Natalia’s expansion of  the painting space to three-dimensional forms makes her works even more powerful by accumulating the transfigured world which brushes on tangibility every day.

Natalia Kozieł is also a time painting artist and author of light installations complementing her output.
