Filip Wierzbicki-Nowak

Born in 1985 in Poznań, graduated in painting from the University of Arts in Poznań, Prof. Dominik Lejman’s studio (2012).

Filip Wierzbicki-Nowak’s works transgress the scope of the so-called classical painting. Using a variety of media, the artist tries to define anew the space which surrounds him and which he calls “reality”. In his new activities, he continues the process of determining space, the task he first undertook in his diploma work. He creates optical illusions, specific visual traps, in order to focus the attention of a random viewer on the immediate reality, i.e. closest surroundings – lawns, road surfaces, pavements, textures of dirty snow. Using transparent materials like e.g. a mirror, glass or polished sheet metal, he attempts to make the accidental viewer realize that it is the seemingly boring, familiar reality which is truly elusive and in fact just an illusion. The artist creates objects, usually transparent, which do not reveal what they are. The material disappears, thanks to which the viewer has an impression that something incredible has happened here. At the same time, he asks the question of control over the painting, reality and its perception. I appreciate Wierzbicki-Nowak’s work for exactly that – departing from the canvas and using a variety of media and materials in creating a new, spatial picture without a brush or paint.
