Justyna Kisielewska

Born in 1986 in Narewka, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (2006-2012), diploma in painting (Prof. Wojciech Łazarczyk’s studio).

The media Justyna Kisielewska uses in her artistic work are painting, installation, sculpture and performance. Her main interests include the issue of visual culture, evolution process of pictures, their acquisition, collection and processing. She concentrates on terms like zapping or zero medium, according to which the construction of a picture is its biggest value.

The author is totally focused on form, her works are very time-consuming as they are created during sessions lasting months, which clearly distinguishes them from the quick, violent and impulsive works of many artists of her generation. The choice of medium in Justyna Kisielewska’s painting projects is crucial, as it is the material used, and especially its physical features and intended effect, that become their actual content.

“The gigantic canvas, covered with a thick layer of semi-transparent silicone, resembles a huge chunk of fat or organic matter, a discharge smeared all over the painting. The hundreds of regularly arranged hairs immersed in it seem to ripple, moved by some inner, biological energy...” (Michał Suchora, “Spontaneous Combustion” exhibition catalogue, Bielska BWA Gallery, 2012).

Justyna Kisielewska is interested in the state when a painting is not considered or created as a carrier of external meanings, but rather as an object per se. The most captivating aspect of this art is its contemplative character.
