I met Rafał Kwiczoł when he moved from the ASP in Gdańsk to Poznań’s University of Arts and joined my painting studio in 2008, where he proved to be exceptionally hard-working and individual in his approach to the themes he tackled. His output is notable for unusual stubbornness and consistency. All his works concentrated on porn images, which he initially separated from his own, personal relationships and experience. He focused on various aspects of pictures generated by pornography. As he wrote himself, he was fascinated with “hard pornography, its indiscretion, money shot, the hyperrealist detail of the genitals, artificiality of the human body, and the face image seen in everything”. Rafał Kwiczoł closely followed the careers, read the personal blogs, and communicated via email with his favourite celebrities. That is how his fascination with Mason Wyler, the American porn star, was born. Painting his pictures, Rafał Kwiczor has no pre-established strategy, he acts haphazardly, performing random gestures. Everything is fulfilled, i.e. everything works as if it was impossible to be fulfilled. He retains the lightness of chance, the furtive gesture and unfathomable sign. In his paintings, he keeps using a few patterns which appear in his earlier works.
