Weronika Bet: The mould of time

Experience is contaminated by toxins excreted by the mould of time which covers perception. This is how – risking pathos but also referring to her own reflections on painting experience, Kristeva’s theory of abjection and fascination with mould – Weronika Bet’s predominant motif of artistic activity might be characterised. Referring to the concept of painting as a temporal practice which appears here and there in theoretical studies (Tuymans, for example), Bet approaches it as an attempt to identify how the passage of time infects experience. Her pictures seem to be solid studies of physiology of perception through extracting, accumulating and recovering memory traces on the surface of the painting canvas, in constant contrast to its monochromatic, abstract background. The percepts emerge from the surface as if they were continually threatened with dissolution. On the other hand, it may be about more than just memory and time itself which covers existence with its mould and contaminates it with its poisons. The painting grasps and materializes the mould of time covering experience and infecting existence with its toxins. At the same time, fed on the digestion of existence itself and covering it with a colourful rash, painting loses its innocence and naivety, allowing contamination. A poison used in appropriate doses (as seen e.g. in homeopathy) may become a remedy. The state of rickety balance is maintained in the game between the figurative elements and the abstract surfaces of the background.
