Agata Bielska paints portraits and landscapes. The reality she creates is composed of permeating layers. The paintings happen in time, one appears on top of the next, they get saturated and they fade. Trees and objects outgrow bodies and the bodies overlap, creating hybrids. Painted landscapes become screens for cinematic landscapes, while tables and floors – spaces for projections of translucent bodies which face each other but do not seem to notice each other. The artist writes that it is impossible to delineate the external and the internal: “I want to see the world from an indeterminate vantage point and reveal it through movement. Not only the movement defined by outer or inner landscapes, but also the movement which results from their mutuality. It complements them in a specific way, creating a synthesis and disturbing the illusion of stability in which we partake.” Slow but expressive movement, saturation and fading, time measured by inevitable change, diffusion and stratification – these are the terms which best describe her works.
