Łukasz Jastrubczak uses various media – video, drawing, installation and music. His works are notable for their coherent, holistic concept going beyond technical circumstances, one that does not determine the problem but rather depends on it to a great extent. At the same time, they are characterized by simplicity, which is a good carrier of suggestive messages. In his art, he tackles a range of themes, including identity, misunderstanding, inexplicable occurrences, limits of fiction and reality. He also analyzes the influence of pop icons and mass-culture phenomena on the perception of reality. He is interested in the issues of invisibility, disappearance, ephemeral “revelations” and madness. In his works, he makes frequent references to cinema classics – he is especially inspired by film noir and science fiction movies. Formally, he also “plays” with such art movements as Cubo-Futurism, Suprematism, etc. During his first exhibition entitled “01”, held at the Kronika gallery in Bytom in 2007, Łukasz Jastrubczak showed a cube referring to the vision of Hal, a computer from Kubrick’s “Space Odyssey”. In his actions featuring subtitles suspended from floating balloons (“The End”, “In Order of Appearance”), the artist used the film framework to confront the cinematic reality with the virtual world. Jakubczak’s “Sleepwalk” – a documented slideshow with split-second frame changes – self-transgresses fear, entering a reality he cannot see. He illuminates his way with millisecond-long camera flashes which help him set the direction and colonize reality by turning it into photographic images. The artist also makes films which are closely correlated with the sphere of visual imagery, including clips about triangles and the Yach Festival award-winning 100nka music video. In his “Third Song about Triangles”, the Geppert Competition work, Jastrubczak combines his interest in music and abstractionism. Set in motion, the triangles touch the keys to generate long sounds forming a melancholy composition of geometric figures. As the artist says ironically: “I am fascinated with triangles [laughter]. The triangle has this uncanny tension (...). Dressing triangles, I hide from the camera. I deconstruct the reality seen through the lenses. Formally – I divide the composition, mentally – I cover the space in which I am the triangle. I disappear. At the same time, I try to play a tune, not just with two hands but three...”
