Magdalena Karpińska bases the aesthetics of her pictures on the old tradition of easel painting influenced by personal memories of the family house. Her works are made in the extremely time-consuming technique of egg tempera, which allows a maximum of only two layers of paint per day. That is why the artist works very slowly, like the old masters did, simultaneously painting two or three pictures. It must, however, be mentioned here that her works are not stylized, they do not pretend to be old paintings. Instead, they are subtle references to the past which should be viewed from the modern perspective. Nevertheless, what is truly valuable in Karpińska’s art is her affection for the painting tradition, which the artist uses with considerable ease. Her paintings are exceptionally sensual, focusing on detail and playing with visual habits, often referring to collective memories as well as her own family history.
