A quiet student, Marcin Zawicki intrigued everybody right from the beginning. The eruption of his painting virtuosity, apparent as early as in his “Funfair” cycle, astonished not only his fellow students. However, his illusions, worthy of the best representatives of trompe l’oeil, the sensual beauty of his “pretty” pictures, haptic to the point of confusion (you almost reach out to touch or lick, the way children do), are not meant for cheap effect. There is an idea behind it all, or rather – a few of them, none excluding the other. In an intelligent, ironic, sometimes self-ironic way, Zawicki tackles the issue of representation in painting, the “correct” themes in art, Goethe’s treaty on colour, the aesthetic banality of post-modernist imagery and devaluation of individual works due to popularizing art. At the same time, he offers his own comment on the contemporary fascination with manga culture. Which, incidentally, leads him to rather disturbing conclusions. One of his characteristic practices is creating miniature models – objects which later accompany his paintings. These painting installations further broaden the discursive field. The work “Showcase” is a perfect example. A picture painted literally inside a shipyard showcase includes its own representation – a miniature placed in the same glass showcase. In his typically ironic manner, Zawicki comments: “Assuming that everybody can (should) be a recipient of art, what is needed is creating art understood in a multi-layered way because clearly people from different backgrounds have different needs connected with art.”
