All ups and downs of work under different names in a place aspiring to be the temple of art, for money befitting the sense of mission I should feel, with people who see the black-and-white world...

Agnieszka Gawędzka writes a medical case study. The colourful paints, the linoleum stencils, the video projections, the leftover objects, the found photographs – all seem to originate from some poisoned source. Or nail-picked from under irritated skin. This is what she writes about her own illness: “Women’s self-destruction is peculiar, it focuses on bodily functions and blood-spilling. What is dormant, hidden, spoilt – gets to the surface. My own reflection has demolished me. I’m consistent in damaging it, struggling with the peeling epidermis, nails and falling hair, the hair I don’t accept, some alien bodies under the skin, organs stuffed inside, potential cell degeneration.” She also portrays her housing estate: “The council houses (...) mean different childhood games, played in large groups. After all, I’m from the baby-boom generation, responsible for the kindergarten epidemics of tonsillitis, smallpox and pinworms. The estate means unpredictable, cramped neighbours who scare the hell out of you, occasionally leaving you with a life-long trauma. It’s anger which has to be dealt with somehow and located somewhere.” In the artist’s works, the external and internal world – both physiological and emotional – is fragmented into aesthetic pieces and then reassembled to form new units. The merge points, the seams, are very distinct, becoming frames for new constructions. Disillusioned as she is, the artist still seems to enjoy the game she plays with the construction of the illness. She admits: “It’s true, I often delude myself.”
