Everyone knows what painting is. When we naively inquire about this, we seek neither technical terms nor any other criteria regulating where painting “starts” and where it might “end.” And it would most likely be in vain to anticipate such passionate discussions about painting as those resulting from painting’s come-back about twenty years ago among art historians and critics. Despite all the rhetorical announcements of the “triumph of painting,” stated on several occasions, any effort to construct some kind of effective hierarchy of art disciplines is problematic. Could it be, then, that all those recurring efforts of young artists to revert to the motifs of painting, are merely reflections of academic standards?

We maintain a profound belief in the myth of painting. As organizers of this competition, we do not claim that the genre should be confined to the traditional rectangular canvas form. Fully conscious of the potential for conceptual chaos, we have not encouraged the abandonment of its traditional definition. But we have made no assumptions in advance and we have set no formal restrictions for the curators. Our aim is to examine what it is that young artists nowadays regard as painting, and to see if their aspirations somehow transcend the success defined by market for apartment decoration. Perhaps we are putting too much at risk, but we’d like to see, with our own eyes, if painting, as an autonomic and important discipline of art, has come to an end, and whether that oft sustained proclamation by some art critics, might be heralded.

The emancipation of the picture has provided painting with unexpected freedom. What can be put forward as a painterly quality occurs nowadays in surprising forms and circumstances. Does the picture as “an open window” still make any sense, or perhaps it is just a picture of a picture, a piece of an installation, an object that can exist only connected with a certain space? /Anna Mituœ/
